Psychological testing process
Typically, evaluations are conducted over three sessions.
Session 1 - An intake session with the individual being evaluated or with the parents if it is a child. Sessions are usually approximately 1.5 hours in length where a detailed clinical interview is conducted.
Session 2 - The testing session will last for approximately 3-5 hours depending on the age of the individual. For adults, these sessions can sometimes be broken up in order to accommodate a work schedule. However, with children and adolescents, the sessions are conducted in one block of time in order to mimic the classroom setting as much as possible. Typically, attention issues, frustration tolerance, and behavioral difficulties often present during a longer testing session.
Session 3 - A feedback session to review the results of the evaluation. This is typically completed approximately 2 weeks after testing. This session would take about 1.5 hours and be with either the individual being evaluated or the parents of a child.
Due to the difficulties with getting psychological testing services covered, many insurances are not accepted. Unfortunately, as many individuals require educational testing in order to address the specific problems, insurances will routinely deny psychological testing as not being medically necessary. As such, it is beneficial to discuss your insurance with Dr. Lokken in advance about your unique situation.
Services may be covered in full or in part by your health insurance. Please check your coverage carefully by asking the following questions:
- Do I have mental health insurance benefits? Are those benefits with the main insurance (e.g., BCBS) or outsourced to another insurance provider?
- What is my deductible and has it been met?
- How many sessions/units per year does my health insurance cover?
- Does my insurance exclude specific types of testing or diagnoses?
Once this information has been determined, I will work with you to find the most beneficial scenario. A invoice will be provided to you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement if you are going out of network. In many cases, I may be willing to bill your insurance for you.
I am currently an in-network provider for BCBS (PPO and HMO) and Humana (all plans except EAP). I am a certified provider for Tri-Care, and am an out-of-network provider for most other insurance companies.
Cash, check, Debit cards, and VISA/Mastercard are accepted for payment. In many cases, the Flexible Spending Account (FSA, HSA, etc.) card may be used.
Failure to show for your scheduled session, without 24 hours notice, will result in a bill for the total cost.
